However, the tech industry has painted a far rosier image of the concept in recent months. The idea is to create a virtual world similar to the internet in which users can explore and interact with each other via virtual avatars.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney was adamant about presenting Fortnite as an alternate reality and an "social experience" when he took the stand in the high-profile lawsuit filed by his company against Apple earlier this year, involving the commissions the iPhone maker takes from app developers. Sweeney's argument was meant to prove that Fortnite is more than a game. It also undermined Apple's claim that Fortnite is not a monopoly because Fortnite users can play it on other devices other than iPhones or iPads.

Fortnite isn't the only game that heavily depends on the concept of the metaverse.
