EDIT: This is also the way I'm hosting my Bukkit server that me and my friends have been working on till I get the steps of portforwarding down, or I have enough money to buy a server.

Step 1: Server Software. This step is completely yours. What you want to do is download your server software, it could be Bukkit, the minecraft server software from minecraft.net, or some other software I don't even know about! You can download it like you would normally, launch it, and then stop the server when it has all the files in that folder. You can also make a LAN server. Yes, this can be used to let others connect to your environment with a client that will be discussed in a moment. Create a new world with all the settings you desire, then open it to LAN. Occities A server!

Step 2 - The Evolve Client: This client is what I'm referring to. Evolve. This client is for you and your friends. It allows you to host parties, chat with other people, and search for servers. The VPN is the main feature of this client. It's like hamachi, but it's sorta in the form of an Xbox Live party. You can chat or use your keyboard to communicate with others using a headset or microphone. You can sign up for an Evolve account at Evolve Home Page. Then, download the client. This client can also work on other games hosting servers, such Terraria, Steam Games and even PSP games with Adhoc mode. Monster Hunter 3 Portable is one example.

Step 3: Getting your friends: Once you got Evolve, sign in from the client, and then start getting friends to download the client too. Once you've done that, open the Friend window. Click the dropdown and then click "Create Party". Once that's done, go into the party, invite your friends, and chose the game. (Minecraft in this instance)

Final Step: Server Time Once you have done everything, you can now start the server.
