On Wednesday, Minecraft's developer Mojang Studios said that it would be excluding the integration of nonfungible tokens, or NFTs, alongside blockchain technology as a whole, in its popular namesake game. Gaming Mojang wrote this explanation:

Mojang stated that blockchain technologies are not allowed to be integrated within our client or server applications. Additionally, Minecraft in-game content like worlds, skins and persona items cannot be used by blockchain technology for creating a rare digital asset.

The company also condemned the "speculative pricing” of NFTs and the "investment mindset" surrounding them. These are both detrimental to long-term game playability and take away from the user experience. It also criticized the "speculative pricing" and "investment mentality" surrounding third-party NFT integrations, as well as NFT wash trades, or fraudulent price manipulation, to support the ban.

Under the new rules, third-party blockchain technologies cannot be integrated with client and server applications within Minecraft. They cannot be used for creating NFTs related to any in-game content including worlds. skins. persona items. While the changes are not likely to affect most Minecraft gamers it will have significant consequences for a subset of gamers who also profit from in-game NFTs. Third-party NFT-for-sale NFT collectors digitizing Minecraft ingame assets could be in violation and could face legal sanctions.
