SIM lock:

A sim lock, network-lock, CARRIER-LOCK, IMEI LOCK or (master) SUBSIDY lock is actually a technical limit built into GSM and CDMA cell phones by manufacturers for use by service providers to restrict using these phones to specific locations and/or networks. This is in comparison with a cell phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) that does not impose any SIM restrictions.SIM locking is really common if subsidized devices are offered with prepaid contracts. It is important to note, however, that this technology linked with the smartphone will have to be compatible with the systems being employed by the network carrier. A GSM mobile will only function with a GSM carrier and will never work on a CDMA service. Likewise, a CDMA cell phone will only work with a CDMA network and won't operate on a GSM service. Take note that newer (2013 onwards) top end cellphones are capable of supporting both CDMA and GSM technologies, permitting customers to use their phones on any type of network.

Unlocking Technology:

A smartphone can be unlocked by entering a code provided by the service operator. Alternative mechanisms incorporate software working on the handset or a computer connected to the device, hardware devices that attach to the handset or over-the-air by the service provider. Almost always the unlock process is permanent. The code required to eliminate all locks from a mobile phone is referred to as the master code, network code key, or multi-lock code. If the device is network locked it will typically show one of these messages: SIM network PIN blocked, Enter lock PIN.

Economics:

The primary reason to unlock a mobile phone handset is to be able to utilize it with another type of SIM card. Customers might want to keep on using their smartphone but with a different service provider or while traveling abroad they might want to connect to a foreign network using a pay as you go subscription.

Unlocking Services:

A lot of organizations provide a network unlocking service . This service calls for individuals that wish to unlock a mobile phone handset to provide their IMEI number to a unlocking company and sometimes they will also request the country and network the mobile phone handset is locked to, often sent through email or submitted on their website. The organization then will provide (in return for a fee) an unlock code for the phone.
