SIM lock:

A sim lock, network-lock, carrier-lock, imei-lock or (MASTER) subsidy lock is a technical restriction built into CDMA and GSM mobile phone devices by manufacturers to be used by service providers to limit the use of these phones to particular countries and/or networks. This is unlike a phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) which doesn't impose any SIM constraints. The reason why numerous network providers SIM lock their phones is that they offer phones at a low cost to customers in exchange for a contract to cover the use of the network for a specific time period, usually between one and three years. This business model enables the business to recoup the price of the device across the lifetime of the contract. These types of reductions are worth as much as hundreds of US dollars.

Unlocking Technology:

A smartphone can be unlocked by entering a code supplied by the service operator. Alternative mechanisms include software running on the device or a computer connected to the handset, hardware devices that attach to the device or over-the-air by the carrier. Almost always the unlock procedure is permanent. The code required to get rid of all locks from a mobile phone is called the master code, network code key, or multi-lock code. If the device is network locked it will generally show one of these messages: SIM network PIN blocked, Enter lock PIN.

Economics:

The primary reason to unlock a mobile phone handset is going to be able to use it with an alternative SIM card. Users may want to continue using their cellphone but with a different service or while traveling in another country they might want to connect to a overseas network with a pre pay subscription.

Unlocking Services:

Quite a few companies provide a network mobile phone unlocking service . This service calls for all those whom would like to unlock a mobile phone to supply their IMEI number to a service supplier and frequently they will also request the country and cellular network the mobile is locked to, frequently sent through email or entered on their web-site. The organization then will provide (for a fee) an unlock code for the mobile phone handset. For a few manufacturers including Nokia and Samsung a variety of services also supply unique remote-unlocking software with instructions, where a cable connection is needed to remove the SIM lock at home. Such vendors may email the unlocking code or software that will remotely unlock the unit. The cost for unlocking a cellphone will fluctuate based on the network its locked to and the handset model itself, as each unlock code is unique to each unique handset.
